Retrospective Exhibition Franck Burty Haviland

From 05 December 2009 to 31 May 2010 - Céret

"The Céret years ... The Cubist period: 1909 -1914."

The Museum of Modern Art in Céret was enriched with an important fonds, through acquisitions and donations from the Haviland family: 80 paintings, 748 works on paper (watercolours and drawings), 63 prints, 31 photographs, 98 archive documents.

The exhibition presents some of the acquired fonds and major works from private collections, mainly of Franck Burty Haviland's Cubist period: 1909-1914.

The French-American artist Frank Burty Haviland played a role in the advent of Cubism in painting and contributed in a decisive manner to the extraordinary adventure lived in Céret throughout the twentieth century.

He encouraged the coming of Picasso and Braque to Céret. His commitment continued until the creation of the Museum of Modern Art in Céret in 1950 when he asked great artists who had lived in Céret to give some of their works to the Museum: this is how his good friend Picasso gave 53 works,  Matisse gave 14 as well as Chagall, Loutreuil, Juan Gris and many others.

The museum aims, with the creation of this fonds and the organisation of this exhibition, to restore this artist to his rightful place in art history.
