The setting up of the Natura 2000 network was a result of two European directives:
- Directive
“Habitats” for the conservation of types of natural habitats
- Directive
“Birds” for the conservation of types of natural habitats of birds as well as migrant species who come and go regularly.
The aims of this network are to:
• Preserve biodiversity
• Make the most of the natural heritage of the town and country. Each Natura 2000 site must promote and reinforce sustainable development by harmonising ecological demands for preservation of natural habitats and endangered species with the economic, social, cultural and local requirements.
These sites are therefore not protected areas where man is not allowed to venture, or nature sanctuaries. They are quite simply areas managed in coordination with their users, in such a way as to maintain their rich heritage and local identity but allow human activity to carry on at the same time. In the
Pyrénées-Orientales: more than 20 Natura 2000 sites. Most of them are part of the Nature Reserves and Regional Natural Park.
